✝ Holy Mass & the Eucharist

The Holy Mass is the centre and summit of Christian life — the unbloody re-presentation of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross. When you attend Mass, you are not going to a service. You are standing at the foot of Calvary.

According to medieval legend, while Pope Gregory the Great was celebrating Mass, Christ himself appeared to doubters — as the Man of Sorrows, rising from the altar. This painting reminds us that at every Mass, He is truly present — Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

🕯 How to prepare?

Arriving early — even just a few minutes — is not merely good manners. It is an act of faith. The church is a place of encounter with the Living God, not an auditorium. A few pointers:

  • Arrive before Mass. Enter in silence, genuflect, and remind yourself where you are and before Whom you stand.
  • Examination of conscience. Is your heart ready? If you are conscious of grave sin, go to Confession first.
  • Eucharistic fast. Refrain from food and drink (except water and medicine) for one hour before Communion.
  • Prayer before Communion. You can pray traditional acts of preparation: acts of faith, hope, love and contrition.
  • Silence of soul. Turn off your phone. Leave the day's worries aside for a while. You are invited to the Lamb's banquet.
"Be zealous in attending Holy Mass also on weekdays, even if it requires sacrifice. God will reward you with his blessings and grant success in your affairs."
— St. John Bosco

🔥 What do the Saints say about Holy Mass?

On the power and mystery of Holy Mass

"It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without Holy Mass."
— St. Padre Pio
"If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy."
— St. John Mary Vianney (the Curé of Ars)
"The celebration of Holy Mass is as valuable as the death of Jesus on the Cross."
— St. Thomas Aquinas
"When the Eucharist is celebrated, the sanctuary is filled with countless angels who adore the Divine Victim sacrificed on the altar."
— St. John Chrysostom

On receiving the Eucharist daily

"I desire the Bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ… and for drink I desire his Blood, which is love incorruptible."
— St. Ignatius of Antioch
"Since it is the 'daily' bread, why do you take it only once a year? Receive daily what is to profit you daily. Live so as to deserve to receive it daily."
— St. Ambrose
"You come to me and unite yourself with me intimately under the appearance of food. Your Blood now flows in my veins, your Soul, O Incarnate God, penetrates mine, giving me courage and support."
— St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe

📖 St. Faustina Kowalska on Holy Communion

No words describe the grace of Holy Communion better than those written by the Apostle of Divine Mercy. Her Diary is an incomparable testimony to a deep eucharistic mystical life.

Diary, 814
"All my strength is in You, O Living Bread. It would be very difficult for me to live through the day if I did not receive Holy Communion. It is my shield; without You, Jesus, I would not know how to live."

Diary, 1392
"Everything that is good in me is due to Holy Communion. I owe everything to it. I feel that this holy fire has transformed me completely."

Diary, 1037
"The only thing that keeps me alive is Holy Communion. From it I draw all my strength; in it is all my power… Jesus hidden in the Host is everything to me."

Diary, 91
"Holy Communion assures me that I will win the victory; and so it is. I fear the day on which I do not receive Holy Communion. This Bread of the Strong gives me all the strength necessary to carry on my mission…"

🙏 How to give thanks after Communion?

The moments after receiving Holy Communion are the most precious prayer time of the entire day. Jesus is literally present within you — this lasts approximately 15 minutes. Do not speak. Do not reach for your phone. Remain in adoration.

  • Personal thanksgiving. Tell Jesus in your own words that you love Him and what you are grateful for.
  • Intercession. There is no better moment for intercessory prayer — for family, the sick, sinners and the souls in Purgatory.
  • Act of offering. Offer Him your day, your work, your suffering — let it become an extension of His sacrifice.
  • Prayers after Communion. Traditional acts of faith, hope, love and thanksgiving (e.g. "Soul of Christ").
  • Remain in silence. Let Him speak. Often in this silence God speaks most clearly.
"After Holy Communion, pray — not only for your own soul, but for the whole Church."
— St. John Chrysostom

Holy Mass is not a ceremony or a spectacle. It is a Sacrifice. It is an encounter. It is a gift whose value we cannot fully grasp in this life. May the words of the Saints encourage you to approach the Lord's Altar more often, more consciously, ever more in love with God.

"Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb."
— Rev 19:9
